Montreal
In my last post I mentioned that I love the proximity to things here. Without traffic, we live just under 5 hours from Montreal. I love that! But of course there's always traffic, but still, 6 hours isn't bad! Last year when we moved in on 9/1, we decided we never wanted to be in Boston on 9/1 again, or at least not leave our apartment at all on 9/1, because it is insanity out there on moving day. So this year, we stayed in our apartment all day, ordered Chinese food for dinner and packed for our trip and it was awesome! We left early Saturday morning so we could avoid any residual traffic from moving weekend and we didn't have any slow downs until the border which was great. We wanted to make it to the temple in Montreal, but about an hour into our trip I realized I forgot some of the stuff I'd need and since the temple there is so small I wouldn't be able to borrow stuff from them even. So we drove in church clothes just for fun I guess! We still stopped at the temple to see it and it was beautiful of course!
After we left the temple we headed into the city and ran a couple errands before we checked in to our Airbnb. That night we went to Mont Real, or Mount Royal, what the city is named for. It's a hill with lots of trails all over and a big park at the bottom. We made it all the way to the Chalet at the top and had amazing sunset views of the city.
It was a lot of walking from the train stop to the park and then a lot of walking to the top and back down and then a long walk back to the train, but it was definitely worth it!
Sunday morning we went to THE bagel place in Montreal. I didn't know this but Montreal is famous for their bagels. They had a huge brick oven in the store and you could watch them make the bagels which I loved!
We ate our bagels and then went to church. We were so glad we found an English ward to go to! Side note about Montreal, EVERYTHING is in French. In the rest of Canada, they print everything in French and English because Quebec makes them, so I thought it's be the same, but no. I should have known from the first sign we saw getting into Quebec.
But, I digress. Church was great and then we headed back to our Airbnb because neither of us slept very well so we wanted some more sleep before we went back out. I got a phone call right as I was about to drift off so then we just got up and went out for lunch. Turns out almost everything is closed in Montreal on Sundays. Some places open at 5 but that didn't help us for lunch. We planned to go to a deli that has been around for 60 years and has excellent smoked meat sandwiches from what we read, smoked meats are something else Montreal is known for. But they were closed. So we ended up going to a very French feeling bistro. And fortunately they had smoked ham and poutine on their menu which were the two foods aside from bagels we wanted to have in Montreal. Greg got a huge burger that had BBQ sauce and smoked ham on it. I got a huge bowl of poutine with the smoked ham and an egg on top. It was all soooo good! We love food trips! We also got maple Cheerios to eat for breakfast and those were so good. I am ready for maple to take over for pumpkin spice as the fall flavour.
After taking a real nap after lunch on Sunday/after Greg watched a movie that I slept through, we went over to Old Montreal and walked around. It felt like walking through Europe and I loved it! We saw the outside of Notre Dame Basilica but it looked like it was closed so we didn't get to see the inside. It was drizzly all day which isn't the best for walking around, but we still had a blast.
Monday morning we wanted to stop at some stores to get more maple Cheerios and some chocolate, but everything was closed. We waited until 10 and still nothing was open. So frustrating! Not even Walmart was open! At least Tim Horton's was open so we could get some donuts and hot chocolate. After a drive, an hour at the border, and more driving, we made it home. It was so great to check out a new city and still get home in time to do laundry, clean the apartment, make dinner, and get ready for the week. Boston is really just located in the best area
