New England Exploring

On Mother's Day we had a friend getting married in New Hampshire/Maine (ceremony in New Hampshire, reception in Maine and only 20 minutes of driving between them haha, love New England!). We decided to go up to New Hampshire on the Saturday, do some hiking, and stay the night there. We drove up into the Whites and hiked an easy trail in Franconia Notch State Park. The weather was absolutely perfect.

On Sunday we planned to drive to a Sacrament meeting before going to the wedding, but sometimes we forget that in New England there aren't as many congregations as we're used to. The Boston area has a good number of them, but outside of that, you really need to plan carefully and we didn't so we sadly missed attending a meeting. But, we made it to Portsmouth, NH and had a fun time checking out the little downtown area and eating lunch at a restaurant with dock seating. I had my first lobster roll finally!

We drove into the country a little to find the church for Ben and Emma's ceremony (Ben is in Greg's program at BC) and my New England loving heart couldn't have been happier with the location of the church. It was a darling little church in the middle of the woods, and it was the perfect day! Blue sky, sun shining, slightly cool still but everything was green and coming alive. Ben and Emma looked so great and were just so happy to make their vows in front of friends and family. It was a perfect ceremony for them.

We then drove to Maine for the reception where we enjoyed great food, toasts, and being right on the water for it all.

The next weekend was the royal wedding, and if you know me, you know I'm obsessed with English history and consequently, the British royal family. So I was up early, watched the whole ceremony and took an embarrassing number of pictures of my TV screen. Don't worry, I'll just post one though!

After the wedding, we drove out to Gloucester, MA which is north and a little east from us. There's a medieval style castle there built in the late 1920's by a famous inventor, John Hammond. This was the quirkiest, most amazing castle and we loved it! Quirky because on the outside and 90% of the inside it's straight from medieval Europe, but the other 10% inside is the kitchen, bathrooms and a couple other modern conveniences that seem so out of place here, but we loved it! We spent the grey, drizzly morning exploring and then stopped a little hole in the wall Mexican place that supposedly was some of the best Mexican food in New England (good Mexican food is hard to come by here and we definitely think this was some of the best!).

This was inside the castle!

The last weekend in May I threw a baby shower for my friend, Caitlyn McFarland, and I'm so disappointed I didn't get a picture of us at her shower!

The sign says "Twinkle, Twinkle, little star, how we wonder what you are..." since they decided to not find out the gender

That evening we went to the temple and came out to the most beautiful sunset

A couple of days later we had a weeknight date night at one of our favourite bakeries, Athan's. We shared a pot of tea and some pastries and I was feeling so glad that Greg has come around on herbal tea! He used to hate it!

I'm just so happy we get to be here in New England for a while. We've loved it so much that we would love if Greg got a job here after he finishes his PhD. Every place has things not to like about it, but the few negatives about New England are easily beat out by the food, scenery, people, and the seemingly endless activities between Boston and the smaller parts of New England.
