Old North Church, Little Italy, Boston Public Market and Boston Public Garden

Today was the first chance we had to go explore downtown. We've been so busy with moving, work, school, and unpacking that we haven't really had a chance to do anything fun yet. It was so great to have a free Saturday! We got up and worked out and then were ready to go and out the door before 11 which was great! We hopped right on the train to downtown and it wasn't crowded at all. And bonus, the guy let us get on the train for free! We rode the train almost right to the Old North Church. We only had to walk like 5-10 minutes to get there. It was quite charming walking through all the little streets line with old buildings. And the church was fantastic. It has been very well preserved and was so cool. There was also a little memorial for all the soldiers that have been killed during the Afghanistan and Iraq wars and been killed by ISIS. It was very humbling and it was pretty cool that everyone was quiet and respectful there.

This sign is hard to read but it says that this was Paul Revere's pew and it is still owned by his descendants!

From here we walked down to the pier because we could see the water from where we were. It was a beautiful, sunny day with the breath of fall blowing lightly in the wind. The water was sparkling blue and was lapping softly against the pier. It was the perfect place to stop in the shade for a few minutes.

From here we planned to walk to the train stop and go check out the Boston Public Garden, but we walked through Little Italy to get there and it was awesome! There were Italian restaurants pretty much every other building, pastry shops, an Italian Pharmacy and a few little Italian markets. We came out of Little Italy to the farmer's market and that was crazy! There were so many beautiful produce stands set up and people everywhere. We were walking towards the train station when we saw the Boston Public Market and decided to go in there. It's a big building that has all sorts of little food stands set up inside. There were produce stands, specialty meats and cheeses, fancy pastries, ice cream, a whole section for apples and cider and a few dozen other apple products, and so many other interesting food stands. We got to try homemade marshmallows which were so good. We saw Spanish chorizo and jamon which made Greg very happy. By the time we were done walking around in there we were both ready to eat. We decided to walk back to Little Italy and try a restaurant in there. We ended up going to this place called Al Dente because their menu sounded so good. I got the lobster ravioli which was fresh made pasta stuffed with fresh cheese and lobster and had this incredible tomato cream sauce on top with some shrimp tossed in. Greg got the chicken buono bocca and it was super yummy too. Penne pasta, spinach, and mushrooms tossed together in a white wine butter sage sauce and had chicken and prosciutto on top. We decided we had to try some gelato while we were there too and stopped at this little cafe to get some gelato to share. We got the cookies and cream and it was so good. It was... I have no words. Just try some. It was that good. After that, we finally got on the train and headed to the garden.

The garden was beautiful! It's so green! And there is a big pond with a cute, old timey bridge over part of it. I could sit there and people watch for hours in good weather. The weather today was perfect. The leaves above us were just golden tinged around the edges with the promise of brilliant colours to come. The sky was a perfect bright blue with only wispy clouds gliding by once in a while. It was the perfect place to sit and soak everything in. After we gave ourselves a little break we walked around and I fell in love. On the other side of the park was the garden part. There were all sorts of beautiful flowers and plants growing along the walkways. There was another memorial here, this time for those that died on 9/11. There were fresh roses sitting in a basket there for the anniversary.

You can sort of see the bridge in the distance there

There were so many more things we wanted to see, but we were too tired and since we are going to be here for 5 years, we figure we have plenty of time to see everything. Here's to many more Saturdays exploring!
